Thoughts on the Oakland Philz Coffee New Store Opening

On Tuesday, March 31st Raven and I spent some time at the Philz Coffee New Store Opening in Oakland.  They sure know how to throw a party.

Since we were given a wall to hang up two of Ravens works, I had an opportunity to observe the "culture" before the opening. In many ways it reminded me of the culture at The Container Store. The managers blended in and worked along side the part-timers who were happy to be there working. They all spent the week stocking, merchandising, cleaning and training. Lots of training and even the opportunity to interact with "customers".  At times for a couple of hours they would let people in who were curious and offer them a free cup, just so the baristas could practice.  Someone always checked in with us to see how we were doing and of course, asked if we wanted a cup of coffee. Everyone has an "air of excitement" about them and they are willing to share.  I was seeing conscious capitalism in action and it works.

At the Opening, I saw everyone either behind the counter making coffee, out walking around and offering platters of pastries or mingling with the customers. At times they would break out in a song or jingle to keep the energy high. There was a host at the door to answer questions and make "connections" with the customers. Raven loves the music that is played at the coffee shops and he found out that the employees get to select the songs, you can even make a request.

Phil was there with his family and Heads of the Company, as well as the Head Roaster with his crew. The Quality Controller is someone I used to work with at the Container Store so it was great seeing him there.  We didn't stay til 3:00 but I would bet that they didn't close the doors til much later.
